General Strike!

General Strike!

On February 17th We SHUT IT DOWN!

We will have day of general strike and non-violent civil disobedience and demonstration.

Our Demands:

1. No Ban, No Wall. The Muslim ban is immoral, the wall is expensive and ineffectual. We will build bridges, not walls.

2. Healthcare For All. Healthcare is a human right. Do not repeal the ACA. Improve it or enact Medicare for All.

3. No Pipelines. Rescind approval for DAPL and Keystone XL and adopt meaningful policies to protect our environment. It’s the only one we’ve got.

4. End the Global Gag Rule. We cannot put the medical care of millions of women around the globe at risk.

5. Disclose and Divest. Show us your taxes. Sell your company. Ethics rules exist for a reason and presidents should focus on the country, not their company.

Students to Gather in Solidarity

The protest was announced in this Facebook post:

In the wake of the recent election results, we believe as students it is important to come together and make sure our voices are heard.

As young people, the future is in our hands. It’s up to us to steer this country in the right direction. We cannot and will not allow the normalization of racism, misogyny, xenophobia, islamaphobia, homophobia, transphobia and ableism that the President Elect has come to embody. Both outside and within our schools, we must be proactive in creating environments that not only accept, but empower marginalized communities. We wish to begin paving a path of resistance that will continue throughout the next four years and beyond.

Although there was previous action on Monday the 14th, many students were not able to participate due to a lack of communication and planning. We also want to make sure that protesting isn’t a one and done deal. This rally aims to be inclusive and invites students and faculty from all Portland metro area schools to participate. We do not want to tell people how to protest, but we urge everyone to avoid violence and destruction. Having restraint will exemplify our maturity and make our message stronger.[/su_column]

There will be an optional walkout at 3:00 pm then we will convene at Holladay Park near Lloyd Center. Try to coordinate transportation with other students at your school. The rally will begin at 4:00. We encourage students to bring signs. Local activists will speak about the ways in which youth can become more involved and the importance of resistance in our communities. This will be followed by speeches from students. Contact us if you wish to speak. After, we will take to the streets and march downtown.

A message from the American Civil Liberties Union:

The Southern Poverty Law Center tallied more than 300 hate incidents since Donald Trump won the election.

Trump thinks hundreds of incidents of hate is “a very small amount” and meagerly told people to “stop it.”  This is not enough. Donald Trump needs to take a strong, decisive stand on hateful harassment, intimidation, and violence and vow to support victims with meaningful investigations and protections.

Sunday Vigil Nov. 13th

Portland Resistance has announced a silent vigil, following a short address.  The event will take place at the fountain & statue at:

Salmon Street Springs
1020 SW Naito Pkwy.
Portland, Oregon 97204

pdx-resistancerally_0198
November 10th anti-Trump rally at Pioneer Courthouse Square

The group posted this announcement on Facebook:

On November 11th Portland’s Resistance hosted a peaceful gathering at City Hall, debriefed our members about non-violent protesting and our mission, and invited our members to join us for a community building exercise

After this event some took to the streets, marching for the acceleration of policy and city action to protect the working class and marginalized populations. In addition to riot police, one response to the gathering of individuals by opening fire on protesters, hospitalizing one.

We are hosting a peaceful vigil in support for the survivor of the shooting, for those who were arrested during peaceful protests across the city, for all who have experienced violence for simply living their lives, for those who have passed as a result of hate crimes, and for those in marginalized communities who will be most impacted by Donald Trump’s presidency.

Oppression and violent language has drastically escalated this past year and directly following the election of Donald Trump. Those of us who have lived with this aggression our entire lives due to our race, gender, sexuality, abilities, citizenship, religion, and/or ethnicity now live in escalated fear as our nation’s dialogue devolves into more harmful and divisive rhetoric.

Please join us for a short address by Portland’s Resistance and a following silent candlelight vigil.

Bring candles, if you can!
